Monti Sibillini National Park, Marche
This rugged yet beautiful mountain chain of the Monti Sibillini reaches its peak at Mt. Vettore, 2,476 metres above sea level in the heart of Le Marche region. It is a territory of unique nature, history and ancient culture. The park stretches over 70,000 hectares and is regarded as a 'park for everybody', not least for the wolves, golden eagles, peregrine falcons, who all live comfortably with hikers, visitors and those still making a living from the mountain.
The abbeys, medieval historical centres and open tracts were all once the mythical Kingdom of Sibilla, and something still hangs in the air if you let your imagination wander. "Sibilla" was the mythical queen of an underground paradise of limitless delights, accessible only by a mythical cavern near the summit of the Monte Sibilla at 2,175 metres. In 1993 the Monti Sibillini National Park or Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini was born to save this unique environment.
The Monti Sibillini National Park offers you plenty of opportunities for an active vacation. You can hike, mountain bike, study botany and wildlife, swim and sail in the nearby lake, paraglide and go skiing in the winter. The area also offers cultural experiences and an excellent local cuisine; Marche is well-known for their truffles especially the white truffle (tartufo bianco). In summer any fresh truffles to be found on restaurant menus will be the tartufo d'estate or summer truffle (Tuber aestivum Vitt.)
